Pixels AMA Recap 16 September 2026
One month after community.pixels.xyz launched, the open source experiment just produced its first real proof of concept: five community-built features have been merged and are heading into the live game next week. Here's the full rundown from this week's AMA β the wins, the honest admissions, and where things are headed next.
What's Happening In-Game Right Now
The Carnival map is back β Twix scattered candy across the map and needs help collecting it, with a reward waiting at the end. There's also an energy party running for the newly integrated Awakening Hunters NFT collection. Two smaller fixes landed too: dojo bottles now correctly give Business XP instead of Farming XP, and the shader/highlight decor slabs β promised back at Chicken Pet's birthday months ago β are finally in the decor store.
Open Source: The First Five Features Are In
This is the headline. Exactly one month since the community website launched, five community-submitted features have been built, bounty-paid, and merged into the game's internal environment. They're expected to go live in next week's update.
1. Favorite Marketplace Items β a long-requested quality-of-life fix letting players star items for a personal favorites list.
2. Marketplace Search & Filters β a proper search bar for buying and selling, instead of scrolling.
3. Searchable Land Bookmarks β no more scrolling a giant bookmark list to find the land you're looking for.
4. Per-Category Land Access Permissions β previously, land access was all-or-nothing. Now landowners can set different access levels per category β for example, opening Producer access to everyone while keeping Pet Care restricted to guild members only. A meaningful unlock for guild-focused land play.
5. Crafter's Memory β arguably the biggest one. This is a personal, auto-updating journal that records every recipe and resource a player has already discovered β no spoilers for undiscovered content, just a memory aid for what you've already learned. It includes a craft planner that calculates exactly how much of each resource you need for a batch, removing the need to tab out to third-party wikis mid-session.
The team was candid that this round leaned toward "low-hanging fruit" β smaller, high-impact fixes that were fast to build and merge. Bigger, more complex community submissions are reportedly already in progress.
The Ask: Submit More Ideas
The team's message was direct β the single best thing the community can do right now is submit more feature requests at community.pixels.xyz, regardless of how big, small, or "terrible" the idea might seem. Bounties are being funded by the team (and can be community-funded too), and there's an open discussion about giving idea-submitters a cut of the bounty when their request gets built β not yet implemented, but under consideration.
Chubkins: Why It's Web2-First On Purpose
The team gave one of their most detailed explanations yet of the Chubkins strategy. Rewards at launch will be gift cards, not crypto β a deliberate choice driven largely by the current US regulatory climate around crypto, which the team described as harder than it looked a year or two ago. Building web2-first allows them to scale user acquisition in western markets where crypto payouts currently aren't viable, while potentially supporting a crypto-reward version in other regions later.
Full global release β including iOS β is targeted for roughly 30 days out, alongside broader polish: retention optimization, subscriptions, and general game-feel improvements. The explicit goal is to build something that can run paid user-acquisition campaigns and generate real revenue, something core Pixels has struggled to do sustainably once token-driven growth slowed down.
Buoy Bucks: Still Broken, Team Says So Directly
Asked (again) about the Buoy Bucks inflation problem, the team didn't sugarcoat it β there's a genuine oversupply issue that requires a larger systemic fix, and that fix is not landing soon. In the meantime, a smaller store update and more raffle-style mechanics are likely, but were explicitly framed as a stopgap, not a solution.
The USDC Question β Still Open
An interesting, unresolved debate surfaced: should in-game payments and staking rewards shift from $PIXEL to USDC? Technically, the infrastructure already supports it. The hesitation is philosophical β the team is weighing whether switching to a "real money" currency changes player psychology around spending, versus $PIXEL's current role as lower-friction "fun money." No decision has been made.
Reflecting on Stacked
In a more retrospective moment, the team discussed why Stacked (their existing reward/tasking tool) hasn't seen wider adoption outside Pixels. Their honest take: building it web3-native from day one, during a period when most web3 games were struggling, likely limited its ceiling. In hindsight, building web2-first β the same approach now being taken with Chubkins β would have opened more doors earlier.
Bottom Line
This AMA marked a genuine milestone β the open source system isn't just live, it's producing shipped features. Combined with a clear-eyed Chubkins strategy and unusually direct honesty about what's still broken (Buoy Bucks, tokenomics), it's one of the more substantive updates in a while.
